how to specify source files in tar?

I know the examples like

"tar -cvf target.tar source1 source2"

blahblahblah

However, I checked man page of tar, but did not find how the source files are specified. I expect to see something like "the files without options are the files to be tarred ... "

Did I miss basic something beyond man syntax description?

The "files without options" in the example refers to target.tar being the argument of the -f option. Everything else is a source file.

unless this is a headless server why not use the gui tools
the "archive-manager" will tar up files just fine
the SAME way that 7-zip( recommended ) ,winrar or stuff-it or winzip do on windows

also for the terminal options you might want to read the MANUAL page
Code:
man tar
