Smile How to setup internet on knoppix

I have just downloaded Knoppix and I can seem to get my internet connected. I am using a DSL modem from earthlink. And I have a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Intergrated Controller Network card. I don't know how to exactly set this up with Knoppix so I can connect to the internet. I there a previous post on how to do this or can someone please tell me how to do this?

dhcp... don't worry about adsl connectivity in linux -- your dsl modem from earthlink should handle your connection (does in atlanta, anyways)

while on my Winxp i did a cmd and then ipconfig and it gave me all my information.
then I went over to knoppix and did netcardconfig and it led me through some steps to select the 0 network card and 1 network card; but one address I am missing is the broadcast address(I have never heard of this). What am I still doing wrong?

And also, I did the dhcp but it still didn't work; is it my network card? I have a Realtek and a broadcom network card installed on my maching and the one that I use is the Broadcom on my XP machine.

I know on my XP system I had to put in my "Preferred DNS Server address" and my "Alternate DNS Server address to make it work? But I don't know how to enter these two numbers in Knoppix. I really like the Knoppix but, I need to connect to the internet.

When I ran what you told me in the Knoppix root (/sbin/ifconfig) this is what came up;

eth1 addr:xxx.xx.x.xx Bcast:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
mask:xxx.xxx.x.x up Broadcast running multicast
MTU:1500 Metric 1
RX packets:366 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:349 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:7
collision:0 txqueue:1000
Rx bytes:37477 Tx bytes:24683
Interrupt:17

Is there somewhere on the internet that has an visual guide on how to set up a "DSL modem with Knoppix" because I think I need step by step instructions on how to do this? Is there some step that I may be missing because I know this has to be a minor problem that will get this working so I can get on the Net? I don't have a router or anything I am just using on PC with a network card and a DSL Connection and I am running the Knoppix from my CD Rom drive. And one more question is there somewhere on the internet that will give me a list of Knoppix commands that I can use.

Like I said in my previous post I did the cmd command and then typed in ipconfig to get my

now run route

aren't we doing one better here? -- giving you interactive step-by-step instructions...

moving on--

here's what your home umm... network ...looks like:

Internet---<| DSL Modem |>------ethernet----<| Your PC |

right?

so you don't have a special router/gateway/hub/switch/whatever

that doesn't mean your dsl modem isn't performing that task. a router is: "a device which forwards packets between networks."

so... this isn't as difficult as you want to make it. you need to tell knoppix to get IP from the DSL modem (via DHCP), and everything should be taken care of, because the DSL modem should also pass down the nameservers, and gateway info (which is what i'm looking for asking you to run the route command -- you have a valid IP for your network, but i'm assuming you put that in yourself, and only half-configured the system in doing so)

OK this is my last time trying because this is about to drive me nutso. I did the ipconfig/all on the Windows side and it gave me some this infomation.
Host Name:xxxx
primary DNS Suffix:
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: Yes
WINS Proxy enabled:Yes

Controller:
Physical add:xxx-xxx
DHCP ENabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled: yes
IP Add:xxx.xx.x.xx
subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway: 172.xx.x.254
DHCP Server:172.xx.x.254
DNS Servers: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
xxx.xx.xxx.xxx

I did a netstat on the knoppix side and it brought up some things that said connected.
I did a route but , I don't truly understand how to do this in the "Root" ; all I typed was route and it brought up something with addresses.

I have the linux book 4th edition would this help me on setting up my DSL for linux..

Note: I also did it this time with "dhcp" but, I don't know if I'm following the steps right because I still click on the "Google" icon and it still won't connect me to what ever address I put in.

I tried also to do ping my "IP Address number" and this worked but when I put in ping goggle.com or even ping www.google.com nothing happend.

earthlink dsl and knoppix

earthlink basically sends out 2 different types of modems. uhp modems and bridge modems. i'm guessing you have a bridge modem.

uhp modems will store your username and password in the modem itself. you can access the firmware by typing http://172.16.0.254/setup in your browsers addressbar. uhp modems simulate an always on connection
if you have a uhp modem then the default knoppix setup should get you online

bridge modems require a pppoe client to send your username and password to the server when you connect
if you have a bridge modem then use the pppoe client in knoppix goto k -> internet -> adsl/pppoe configuration
