How To Set Resolution to 1680x1050 on Ubuntu

Hello, I'm new to the forums and Ubuntu itself.

Everything is working fine except the monitor always keeps popping up a message saying that my it is not at optimal resolution and that its optimal resolution is 1680x1050 at 60 Hz.

I think I may need to download drivers, but what kind. Are they on the additional drivers in the system settings menu?

My video card is a NVIDIA GeForce 7025 and I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit.

Thanks!

You can get the nvidia firmware from synaptic pakage manager
I believe it's the nvidia-glx package

Where do I get that?

Would it be better to just get a new add-on video card and use a dvi cable?

It's under System>>Administration>>Synaptic tab on your menu or task bar.
You can also change your monitor resolution under System>>Preferences>>Monitor

Sorry I don't see it. I went to system settings and clicked on display, but it would only allow me to go to 1024x760.

I typed Synaptic into Unity but it doesn't pop up anything.

I am running Ubuntu 11.10.

You can get packages through software center also but it appears synaptic isn't installed by default in ubuntu but can be installed. I use it more than software center because it's easier to find what you're looking for.

Basically, is there some way I can add a 1680x1050 resolution to my computer?

Right now, the 1020x860 resolution is making my screen kind of blurry and really big.

So, are you saying I should download this package?

If so, where should I download it from?

did you read the link I posted? If you want to learn linux you better learn to search then read versus asking all the time. If there is a language barrier tell us. Not trying to be mean, just speaking from experience and trying to help.

Yes, I thank you for that link.

I tried downloading the recommended driver, and although that made things work faster, it still did not give me the higher resolution I wanted and made my libreoffice crash all the time, which I don't know why.

I tried adding the resolution, but the terminal says that the command isn't valid.

Is there some other way to solve my problem?

Oh, just to add, I see many proprietary drivers to download, but which one do I download? Can I download multiples of them?

If your monitor is as misbehaved as mine, you may need an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Here's mine - use at your own risk:
Code:
