How to scan my computer from viruses?(Linux Ubuntu)

I am using Ubuntu and every time I am checking my friendster account I've experience a problem like the window will automatically disappear and an antivirus will appear telling me that my computer is suspected for a virus(even if I don't install any anti-virus).Can u help me solve my problem? Does my computer really have virus? Its giving me a hard time.

Is there any free antivirus that I can install? Can you show me a step by step procedure on how to scan my computer from viruses since I am not familiar yet with Linux (Ubuntu).

I appreciate any help that you can gave me.

Thank you.

What do you mean by 'you're checking your friends account'?
"the window will automatically disappear" - what window?
Scanning for viruses is not really necessary, but if you want, you can get avast for linux http://www.avast.com

Could you possibly mean a browser popup with an ad that claims you have a virus???
Get adblock (Extras - addons) - and/or simply ignore it.

Is this happening only when you are on websites? as for an AV on Linux you could use clamav. But I have never needed an AV for linux nor expierenced that problem on any linux desktop that I have worked on.

The window that pops up claiming you have a virus is an ad, nothing more. You do not have a virus, so ignore it.

As for the window disappearing, some types of pop up ads can hide your window. Are you sure the browser window is not just minimized, look for it at the bar at the bottom of your screen.

I second oskar's suggestion of getting adblock. And Oskar, "friendster" is a social networking site in the same vein as myspace or facebook :).

That explains the spelling :)
