how to run telnet server in fedora 8


hi..whenever iam typing service xinetd start
iam getting xinetd as unrecognised service..
triedt to download rpm for xinetd for fedora 8 i386 but our college proxy
server is not allowing to download any....
is there any other way...

1) don't use ssh instead.. it should already be fully working.

2) seems you haven't installed xinetd, so that must be installed first, no way around that. if you cant get it in yum etc, then copy it to a disk.

Hey acid_kewpie, I think you missed a comma there..

don't use ssh instead - sounds like your saying not to use ssh, should be

don't, use ssh instead - ie don't use telnet

iam asking u how to start telnet service and u people are telling me not to use it and all...

i have installed xinetd using rpm ...
i started xinetd ..
but after that when iam starting telnet by using chkconfig telnet on ..telnet service is not starting...


iam getting this error
"error reading information on service telnet: No such file or directory"

can anyone tell me what is the problem ...do i need to do some settings or i need to install something else too..

telnet is not a service in its own as it's run via xinetd instead. if you run "chkconfig --list" it should list the xinetd subsystems available at the bottom and their status there. by default telnet is disabled remember, so you need to edit /etc/xinetd.d/telnetd or equivalent to enable it.
