How to run a mailserver?
 

Hello.

I would like to run and admin a mail server at home. I setup postfix/Dovecot and locally work ok. I registered a domain at no-ip.com but, need help getting it configured so I can send and receive mail from and to my local server via no-ip plus. Also in the future I would like to offer friends to send/receive mail through my server using virtual domains and users.

I am confused on what to setup at both ends in order to make it work. Has any body done this? Please help. Your help would be very appreciated.

I have recently built a server that basically lives in my cupboard and does not need any attention. It is my mail server I have called "Sapphire".

It was built out of bits of hardware I had laying around and a 2nd hand case from ebay.

It runs ubuntu 8.01 server without a gui. I ssh into it from anywhere to administer it.

The mail sever I built and configured in 1 weekend also using my own paid for domain.

I set up the domain through the site zoneedit.com which is a free DNS site. They provide you the nameservers to add to your config files.

Once you have the DNS setup on your machine you are ready to start installing the software and configuring it.
