How to resume a remote process?

I was in a bundle compilation and installation of software on a remote machine via ppp and SSH , when the ppp daemon suddenly died.

I suppose the installation process is still running on the remote machine, but it will possibly never finish for lack of user interaction (it asks some questions during installation, to which noone answers now).

Is it possible to 'connect to' this process and continue the installation next time when the ppp link comes up again?

IIRC, not once the parent shell is gone, unless you used an app like "screen".
