Hi all
After we have tried (unsuccessfully...) installing nVidia drivers, according to
*u*r*l*/home.comcast.net/~andrex/Debian-nVidia/installation.html
the start-up process is just a mess.
We are trying now to return it to the initial state. PLEASE HELP
Now details:
Knoppix 3.8.1 installed on HD
#1: tried
Code:
apt-get update
apt-cache policy nvidia-kernel-$(uname -r)
apt-get -t $NVDIST install nvidia-kernel-common nvidia-kernel-$(uname -r)
failed
#2: tried
Code:
apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common
failed in a strange way
#3: tried
Code:
cp -p /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.bak
md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >| /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
The questionary was *really* strange, I hardly understand a single word in it.
Eventually we restored XF86Config-4 from XF86Config-4.bak
#4: tried
Code:
grep -q ^nvidia /etc/modules || echo nvidia >> /etc/modules
There was no visible effect in the /etc/modules.
#5: restart computer
Received a lot of lines during linux start-up - "failed... failed.. failed..." (about 2 screens).
------
I thought to reinstall the Knoppix from the scratch... But is really a Windows-like style of fixing problems.
There is no visible problem - but the feeling that something now wrong in the system is disturbing
