Unfortunately file once deleted is deleted. :( No way you can recover them using Unix. Maybe some third party tools .. But am not aware of any...

1. stop using that partition
2. try photorec and/or testdisk

What file system are you using? Use the command 'mount' to find out. I use reiser fs and when I had this problem I used 'reiserfsck --rebuild-tree' Read the man pages but be careful, it has an element of danger (apparently).

well this time you might be out of luck .
As chrism01 pointed out
you you STOP right then and there and DO NOT use that partition or download anything -- you STOP

if / or /home
do not even log out or turn off the machine

then use photorec

now for "system rescue cd " burn a copy and for next time
http://www.sysresccd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage
you do need to reboot

and keep a copy of extundelete installed
http://extundelete.sourceforge.net/

however it can ONLY be used on an UNMOUNTED partition
