How to restarrt X when an APP hangs?

Good Evening everyone!

I am looking for information as to if it is possible to crash X or restart X if an application hangs. For example I am having troubles getting Counter-Strike Source working. So I am in the process of trying different settings to find a working solution. However in the mean time it is failing and locking up gnome. I can hit ctrl+alt+f3 and get into run level 3. However I am not able to login and type /sbin/telinit 5 to restart X It just seems to hang.

Is there a step I am missing? Any info would be great. Thanks guys!

You probably don't need to restart the X server. There is a command called xkill that works very well at killing anything running on the X server.

If you can't even run xkill you can use ctrl+alt+backspace to restart the X server.
