How to resize root partition without loosing data?

I have installed ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop. I want to resize my root partition without loosing data? Is this possible with gparted?

Yes - but use the gparted liveCD.

Yes it is possible but you have to be in an environment that the partition is not mounted. Thus you will need to boot from a live distro like the gparted live cd or ubuntu and do the resize in there.
