How to rename Items on the Desktop

Hi,

I'm a newbie and I think I will be for a long time. I have installed Mepis 3.3.1/KDE 3.3 on a box today, so I am not running it as a live CD.

As a normal user, not root, I have worked out how to add links on the desktop and how to rename them and even change their icons. When I reboot the icons are still there but with the original names and icons, not the ones I have set. Why isn't it saving the settings? It manages to remember the change to the background image I set.

Thank you for any help and suggestions.

They are likely being set during the bootup process. I don't know the specifics for your distro but there are various configuration files used at startup---all containing "init" or "rc"---some are in /etc

Here's one tutorial that may be useful:
