How to remove VLC player from raspbian

Please tell me how to get this cancer off my raspberry pi. It doesn't work it never has, it's great on a mac and on windows, but a raspberry pi does not have the resources to run video on it but I can't get rid of it. I have tried all the following:
Code:
sudo apt-get remove vlc

sudo apt-get purge vlc

sudo apt-get remove vlc nox
rebooted after each of these, open up terminal window type vlc, and up it pops.

I am happy to remove it manually if someone can point me at all the files it resides in.

Kind regards
iFunc

iFunction,

Your last command should be:

Code:
sudo apt-get purge vlc-nox
Also try this:

Code:
sudo apt-get purge vlc-data

Hi there, thank you for the post, but these did not work either, I had to go through and strip it all out manually in the end.

this left your packet manager in a very unclear state.
don't expect to be able to make updates anymore.

with just a little more patience, you could have solved this properly.

"did not work" is too vague in itself.

a manual cleanup might be possible now.
post output of
Code:
dpkg -l 'vlc*'
edit:
actually all this depends on how you installed vlc in the first place.
