Downloaded smart files to temp and as su did install. Now smart & smart update are under system/configuration but when I try to invoke the program I get message to sign in as root which I do then smart never runs. Using file viewer all programs seem to be installed. What should I try next?

Thanks Stan

Start Konsole as a normal user and enter kdesu "smart --gui". Post back any error messages printed on the Konsole screen.

Like I mentioned I am total newbe and do not understand exact what to enter.

Assume I have started Konsoule as normal user.
Exactly what do I enter. kdesu "smart --gui" does not make any sense to me. I entered exactly as above and what I got was
bash: [b]kdesu: command not found

Do you have KDE installed? If so kdesu should be available. You need to enter the bold commands as printed e.g.
Code:

$kdesu "smart --gui"

remove suse xine replace with full version

Sorry just put me in the special ed class for slow learners.

I run kde as my default desktop. At command prompt I entered
Code:

$kdesu "smart --gui"
[/QUOTE]

The response was bash: [code]: command not found

Thanks

Are you running KDE or GNOME. Also did you make sure that you did not enter the dollar sign since its there to just show you a shell prompt?

Did major update to kde which allowed me to install smart. Unfortunately I installed smart for 10.1 rather than 10. It did not work of course so I am trying to delete it then install smart for 10 but get the following message.
ERROR(InstTarget:E_RpmDB_subprocess_failed)
---
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

2006-08-24 20:02:52 smart-addons remove failed
rpm output:
warning: waiting for exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted (1)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Guess it has to be done via command line which I am very slowly learning. When I figure this out I will install smart for 10 and continue from there.

I've been having the same problem myself, I've posted the outputs on this page http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=1#post2492763
