How to reenable the graphical interface ?

I am using gnome under fedora 14. The graphical welcome screen appears to be frozen. I can access the command prompt through ALT-F2.
Thanks

Hi,
executing startx did nothing. After doing ps ax , the only reference to x in the list was "xinetd -stayalive -pidfile /var/run/xinetd.pid"
