If you want to make your desktop icons smaller in Gnome, open your Configuration Editor, in Debian it's located, in the upper task bar at, Applications > System Tools > Configuration Editor then in the the Config. Editor on the left go to apps > nautilus > icon_view highlight icon_view its contents will open on the right view screen. Right click on default_zoom_level in the window that comes up pick Edit Key... left click on Value and change it from standard to small press Ok and you should be good to go.
Edit: If you want to get rid of the icon altogether in the Configuration Editor go to apps > nautilus > desktop in the right window uncheck the boxes that are checked.
