How about OpenOffice.org?

Or Abiword (although I have found that it doesn't tend to do quite as good a job as OpenOffice for complex documents).

OpenOffice's Writer will read and write most Words DOCs.

Other text editors might also... AbiWord, KOffice's KWord, etc.

You can also upload the file to Google Docs and work with the document online in a browser.

Open office is the best...
you can try it??????????
however it will not be able to read MS office 07 files saved in .docx format...
i think Microsoft has done this intentionally .......

OOo Version 3.0 will support OpenXML (.docx) fully when it comes out in September 2008, but even before the time it is released there are lots of ways to open .docx files in OpenOffice.org:

Convert OpenXML (.docx, etc.) in Linux using command line using OdfConverter
Review: Zamzar.com .docx to .odt Converter
Review: docx2rtf Document Converter
