How to read out installed firmware on e.g. Network Interface card

I want to make a list of hardware, software and firmware used in a Linux (Debian) system, but can not find a way to read out the installed firmware on e.g. Network Interface Card. This for instance to find out if there is a newer firmware available
or not. Does anybody know how to do this ? Via lspci, lshw and dmidecode I can not find this info.

This is from the Debian Wiki on the subject of firmware. Scroll down for a listing of the firmware files.
