Hi umarbakari, Welcome to LQ.

You can use mplayer. But have to install it from its source and its codecs.

You can install the Mplayer codecs from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/
Download these files "mplayer-codecs-20061022-1.i386.rpm" and "mplayer-codecs-extra-20061022-1.i386.rpm".
Install them by right clicking on each of the files and using install software.

Also, you can install the MPlayer using YaST. You may need to enable Packman repository in the Software Sources/Repository section in YaST.

I installed the the mplayer codecs but still getting the same error msg:
and if i try to search i dont get anything.

/usr/lib/gst-install-plugins-helper requires an additional plugin for this operation
The following plugin is required:
Advanced Streaming Format (ASF)
Do you want to search for this now?

Which version of the OpenSuse you are using and is your system 32-bit or 64-bit architecture?
What is the desktop environment you have installed, KDE or GNOME?

In YaST, go to Software section. There is an entry for configuring the Software Source/Repositories. Open that, then in the Software Sources/Repository window, select, Community Repositories. Click Next. You will see a list of software repositories. In that select, Packman repository. Click Next. It will download the repo data about software packages.

Once done, install the W32Codecs package using the software centre or in terminal execute "zypper in w32codecs-all" without the quotes and as a root/admin user.

You can also install VLC media player which plays most of the formats.

For installing software using YaST, go through the links at the right side of the web page in this link http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:YaST

It has sections related to Software Management for installing softwares and Software Repositories for configuring the package repositories. Go through these links in the above link.
