How to play MP3's and videos?

I have a bunch of MP3 songs backed up on a dvd disc from the windows side of my PC. Question is, how do I get all of these to work in linux? I also have some videos I downloaded a while back. The basic reasoning for installing my linux was to use it for vids and songs and all other basic applications, while I'll boot into windows for gaming.

I DL'd it now I just have to figure out how to install it. I've used unix before, but crap this is difficult. Sure do miss those .exe programs in windows LOL.

What distro are you using? The codecs might be more of a problem, but chances are you can get a distro package for mplayer.
