yes. but you have to understand RHEL does not support playing mp3 'out of the box' for legal reasons. With that said install the rpmforge-release package as described here:

http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/FAQ.php#B

When done as root type something like:

yum install mplayer mplayerplug-in xmms xmms-mp3

The packages mplayer and mplayerplug-in are for videos and watching videos on-line respectfully. The xmms package is like winamp and the xmms-mp3 package is so one can listen to mp3's. Mplayer will also allow one to listen to audio formats like mp3's also. You might to also get some codecs for mplayer, in this case visit:

http://rpm.pbone.net/

Search for and get both:
mplayer-codecs-20061022-1
mplayer-codecs-extra-20061022-1

Install them after downloading by typing as root: rpm -Uvh mplayer-codecs*.rpm

.

Was concerned of this happening, try adding some repos not normally associated with RHEL/CentOS5, place these repo files in your /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory;

FC6.repo file:
Code:
[fc6-base]
name=Fedora Core 6 Updates
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=core-6&arch=$basearch
enabled=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-extras
gpgcheck=0

[fc6-updates]
name=Fedora Core 6 Updates
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=updates-released-fc6&arch=$basearch
enabled=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-extras
gpgcheck=0

[fc6-extras]
name=Fedora Core 6 Extras
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=extras-6&arch=$basearch
enabled=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-extras
gpgcheck=0
freshrpms.repo file:
Code:
[freshrpms]
name=Fedora Core 6 - $basearch - Freshrpms
mirrorlist=http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/6/mirrors-freshrpms
enabled=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-freshrpms
gpgcheck=1
Then try as root: yum install mplayer mplayerplug-in --enablerepo=fc6* --enablerepo=freshrpms

This is an alternative way to install mplayer, RHEL5 is based on the code from FC6 and using the FC6 rpms does work in many cases. The yum repo are configured to be disable unless manually enabled.

what shall i do if i did all what you said but this was my output
as i wasn't have the FC6.repo File so i added it under
vi /etc/yum.repos.d/FC6.repo
and wrote all what you posted then this was the output here

[root@localhost Desktop]# yum install mplayer
Loading "rhnplugin" plugin
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
This system is not registered with RHN.
RHN support will be disabled.
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
Parsing package install arguments
No Match for argument: mplayer
Nothing to do
[root@localhost Desktop]# vi /etc/yum.repos.d/FC6.repo

BTW,
this o/p is the same for every time i'm using yum under RHEL5 but for me it is very easy to use i tunder Fedora .. can i get any help from you ?

Hey this was good info but I am still getting a dependency error:

Error: Missing Dependency: liblzo.so.1 is needed by package mplayer

Which I have been unable to get around. I did an "yum info lzo" and I get the following information:

Installed Packages
Name : lzo
Arch : i386
Version: 2.03
Release: 1.el5.rf
Size : 427 k
Repo : installed
Summary: Portable lossless data compression library
Description:
LZO is a portable lossless data compression library written in ANSI C.
It offers pretty fast compression and *very* fast decompression.
Decompression requires no memory. In addition there are slower
compression levels achieving a quite competitive compression ratio
while still decompressing at this very high speed.

Which tells me I have liblzo.2 installed not liblzo.1 is this correct and how do I resolve it.

I am on RHEL 5.2 and would like to load mplayer and mplayer-plugin.

Thanks for the information in advance!

ozminh,

Thanks but I really believe that there is something else going on. I have followed several directions about how to load mplayer (I had it installed at one time but removed it to test out some other packages). All of them improve the situation except I cannot move forward without resolving this dependency. I believe I have what is needed by mplayer but it is a newer version. Is there a way to force it to accept this new version?

ignore it
'rpm --nodeps..'

or compile from source, they will get your com's info when run the 'configure' file, then 'make'

Why don't you use RealPlayer for linux.
It is easy to use and user friendly. You can download it at,
www.real.com/linux
