How to play .dat movie files in Linux?

Dear friends,

I am a newbee in the field of Linux and strong supporter of open source.

I have been trying to install linux several ocassions and have tried Mandrake, Redhat etc. Recently I was able to instal Suse Linux 9.1 on to my system. I am happy that I chose to instal this version becasue of ease of installation and very nice and easy interface.

I have lots of CDs containg video files with .dat extention. I do not know how to play them. Can any one kindly help me how to play these files and what software needs to be installed?

Please help.

MPlayer should play those fine, just head over to MPlayerHQ and follow the installation instructions.

Next time, you could try using the forum search feature. For example, in this case you could have searched for 'dat play video'.

Good luck

hi there
if u get some application i do not know whether u cannot compile it or no because somewhere in this forum i spotted that Suse personal edition does not have gcc
so look out for gcc first if u do not have it
also xine is agood player apart from Mplayer

(xinehq.de)

look if u can run

gcc--version
