'tar' is for files with tar in the suffix, like *tar.gz, *tar.bz2
'tar -zxvf' : Is used when your tar version is older than "-1.15".
I.e. an OS which origins before year ~2005.
This will auto-detect any suffix : 'tar xvf' (Today also suffix tar.xz )

Un-compressing e.g. ns2.31_fhmip.patch.gz : $ gunzip ns2.31_fhmip.patch.gz
The patch can be applied to ns-2.31 with $ zcat ns2.31_fhmip.patch.gz | patch p1

FHMIP, ns-2.33 :
$ tar xvf ns-allinone-2.33.tar.gz
$ cd ns-allinone-2.33/
$ patch -p0 < fhmip_ns233.patch
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...ew?usp=sharing
$ patch -p0 < otcl_ns234_gcc-4.4.patch
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7S...ew?usp=sharing
$ export CC=gcc-4.4 CXX=g++-4.4 && ./install
$ cd ns-2.33/
$ cp ns ns233-fhmip
$ sudo cp ns233-fhmip /usr/local/bin/

Simulation : $ ns233-fhmip fhmip_simula.tcl
.. OK, the files traffic.nam 47.2MB, traffic.tr 32.8MB are created.
$ nam traffic.nam : OK.

Well, there are other choices :
"MIPv6", mobiwan http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/tags/mobiwan/
PMIPv6, nist-mob http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/tags/nist-mob/

You can have as many ns-allinone-2.xx as you want,installed at the same time.
But : Do never add any *PATH text to .bashrc . Not required.

And : Don't use plain 'ns' is a simulation command, with multiple ns2`s.
All simulations can be done with 'ns-<new-name> file.tcl . See post #2 :
$ ns233-fhmip fhmip_simula.tcl
