How to password protect folder on Linux
Hi, everyone. I'm very new to Linux (Mint), and I am trying to transfer documents and folders from my Windows laptop to the Linux Desktop via an Ethernet cable.
On the Windows network window, I can see the folder I'm sharing from the Linux computer. I can put Windows files in this folder, and it'll show up on Linux, however, everyone on the network can view those files. How can I password protect that folder so that only I can have access to them from the Windows computer? Thank you! |
This looks like a start:-
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/passwor...older-windows/ You can also 'Lock a Folder'- http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/pa...der-windows-10 |
You can change the permissions from the widows side, right click > properties, and make it so only you can read the files.

Thanks for those links. I have checked them out - I am currently using a Windows Vista which does not have the encryption (with password) feature available.
Is there a way for me to send files directly to the Linux machine without it showing up on the network? This method will also work for me. |

You could always use an external hard drive copy and than transfer those files from the Windows machine to the Linux machine. |
It might be safer for you to use a usb thumb drive rather than the network (sneakernet).

When someone browse the network, users without the proper permission will not see those folders. To send files to Linux from Windows or vice versa, you can use WinSCP. Good luck!! |
