how to partition a harddisk??
Hello everybody,
i am using Suse 8.0 and would like to test Linux From Scratch, to get a better understanding whats going on behind Linux. So i have to partition my existing root partition. I tried it with yast. But why am i not able to change the size of a partition even when there 's freespace left and create an new one? You have to know that i am an old windows kid and thought that this is an easy task as partition with partition magic or something like that. What am i doing / understanding wrong?? Any help would be appreciated :) Greets Sam |
I think the problem is that your root partition is mounted. You must first unmount it to be able to resize it.
Try a program called Parted and check here on how to make a boot disk so you can do what you want. Be sure to read the docs though cuz messing with your partitions could mess up your data. HC |
That might mess stuff up, you don't have free space anywhere else?

I 've got 3 harddrives installed, one is completly free. Its mounted as follows:
/dev/sdb 8.5 GB DPSS-309170N /dev/sdb1 8.5 GB Linux native /home/ftp-ocs/UPLOADz but if i am trying to create i get an error there is no more space left... okay this is not to hard to understand... but how am i able to move or degress the space which is used on sdb1 to create a new one??
