how to obtain installation from source

I have the fedora 13 installed on my pc, but I have chroot debian in my NAS arm. My question is for NAS, but is the same for only linux generally.
Regarding NAS, some packets are old, because there are not binaries for latest version for a software. But I can install latest software from source configure, make, make install etc... In the case of NAS, this process goes for many hours like 12hours or more.

In order to avoid the same process again in the case of a clean install of chroot debian, or to configure 2-3 NASes that I have, how can I "backup" the software that other times fast install.

thanks in advance

One good way would be to make your own .rpm and/or .deb package for it. I forget what I used to make mine, it's been so long; maybe yada (for Debian). There are whole books written on how to make rpm packages.
