How to name my linux workstation like in W2K?
Hi Folks,
I have FC1 installed on my workstation and Mitel SME on my server. I'm trying to use SMB to login to my FC1 Workstation from the server to do a backup. To do this I have to give my FC1 workstation a name. I'm pretty sure it's in the /etc/hosts file and a search on the web has not given me a definite answer. I've tried putting a name on the hosts file but then Gnone gives me an error. Any help or a point in the right direction would be great. Thanks, Craig |

Now I get a Gnome error
I've tried using the hostname command to name my linux workstation. Now I get an error from Gnome on login. The error is:
"Could not lookup internet address for local.localdomain. This will prevent Gnome from operating properly. It may be possible to to correct this problem by adding local.localdomain to the file /etc/hosts." My hosts file looks like this: # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost linux "linux" is what I named the workstation. This machine is on my home LAN with another linux server sharing the ADSL connection using DHCP. Thanks again, Craig |
Put netbios name = computer name in the etc/samba/smb.conf file, you need samba though. I don't get why this is controlled by samba, but I did it and it works. :D The hostname command does not really work, because when you reboot, it just resets to localhost.localdomain, and that's not really a real hostname because if you type that in any program it won't resolve nowhere, unless you're on the machine.
