How to mount floppy disk?

hello, there,

Os: TurboLinux Enterprise Server 8.0

When I typed the command "mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy", it told me "mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device".

How to get the name of floppy disk in "/dev"? is it "fd0"?

then how to mount floppy disk?

Best Regards.

First, something simple. Make sure the disk is in the drive. It won't mount what ain't there.

Next, ls -al /dev/fd*

fd0 should be there. If you are using the 2.6 kernel, then it's created dynamically. If not, and you aren't on the udev filesystem, then you will need to lookup doing a 'mkdev' to create the device. Google or man it.

This is probably one of those weird errors that only 's experience

Check the usual: floppy in drive, etc.

If you have a windows-formatted floppy, make sure that you have module "vfat" loaded. If not, do, as root, a "modprobe vfat". Also do (prob. as root) a "tail -f /var/log/messages" while mounting the floppy. You might get more info.

Make sure the your ordinary user is in the "disk" group: do a "groups username". If not, add the user to the "disk" group. Check man "usermod" on more info. You can alternatively use "kuser", "linuxconf" or something else for more user friendly user editing.

/You need an entry like this in /etc/fstab

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto defaults,user,noauto 0 0

The second field can be any mount point you choose;
the third gets mount to detect Linux or DOS formatted floppy (maybe others too);
the fourth field specifies that any user can mount it (user) and that it will not be mounted at boot time (noauto)
the fifth and sixth field are ignored for manually mounted floppies

If you have this entry in fstab then any user can put a DOS or an ext2 formatted floppy in the drive and issue the command
mount /dev/fd0
provided the device exists (see previous posts to this thread). df will show it.
