to check for a particular service(whether its configured to start with system)
Code:

Use netstat command to list currently open sockets.

first DO NOT login to the gui as root !!!

a remote ssh login as root to administer the remote install is fine .
( unless you are sitting in front of the computer and will NOT be remote logging in )
then disable "remote login "

you left out some very needed information

WHAT programs ?

are they deamonized ?
or just programs you want to start up on boot

2 different situations; do you want them to start

1. at boot
OR
2. when root logs in

these are NOT the same thing.
