Lightbulb how to make my bootdisk recongnise the new kernel??

Hi, i am a totally newbie to linux.. pls go easy on me..Thanks!!
I am using Redhat 9 on my compaq armada E500 notebook. I have install Windows XP and Windows 2000 server into the notebook.I used a liunx boot disk to boot into linux . I like to upgrade the kernel to 2.6 version cos i heard that it can support NTFS read/write..I have 2 questions in mind ,pls advise me.

1) Presently i have 2.40.20-6 kernel and i like to patch to 2.4.26 version..from what i read i need to recompile the kernel(hope i didnt get it wrong)..then what do i have to edit the boot disk so it can recongnise the new kernel??

2)I would like to upgrade to 2.6 kernel from 2.4( after sucessfully patching the system as stated above) .. let's assume that i have sucessfully upgraded ( hope it wont be a nightmare).. then how do i edit the boot disk to point to the new kernel??

Thank you so much for viewing this post.I appreciate greatly if the users in this forum can help out a newbie.

You need to recreate the bootdisk (IIRC /sbin/mkbootdisk) after upgrading, because the kernel image is kept on the disk, and yea you need to recompile if you upgrade using the source.

The NTFS write support in 2.6 kernel is not complete so you'll most likely be disappointed.
But anyway for upgrading to 2.6 on RH9 this is a good guide:
