How to make KDE Default Windows Manager

I'm using Debian Linux, which comes up to a log in screen, an I can choose from several Windows managers, including IceWM, Gnome, and some others. I recently used ap-get install to install KDE, but I don't know how to make that my default windows manager. How do I go about making this happen?

Thanks,
Jesse

I'm new to Linux. But I may be able to help. Im on Mandriva using KDE. To make KDE default (on here) I go to K Menu|System|Configuration|Configure Your Computer

Then it makes you put in the root pass, then you click "Boot" on the left side. And then go to Autologin. And you can select which environment you use to log in.

I'm not too sure how to do it if you dont auto login. I dont auto login, but my default is KDE... I cant seem to find where to do that

Probably use the Gnome Display Manager if so you may want to apt-get install kdm the KDE Display Manager during configuration choose to use the kdm as the default window manager when the config question comes up. Now for the first time logging in with the KDM choose kde from the drop down list now every time you login it will choose kde until you login to another desktop then that would become the last default desktop used and logged into. BTW those are not window managers but desktop environments the manager is the part that allows you to login.

Edit: Almost forgot /etc/init.d/gdm stop will stop the GDM from the command line then /etc/init.d/kdm start will start the KDM and the CTRL + ALT + F7 keys at the same time will take you to the KDM if not done automatically when stating.

Do a which on the "startkde" command to make sure you have that and in your home directory create or edit a file called .xsession, then add "startkde&" into it. If you already have one of these make sure it's not starting another window manager.

Thanks, that did it

Thanks for the reply. That did it. I figured I was using the wrong terminology. I'm so used to Windows, getting to the way Linux works is proving to be a real challenge. I don't use Linux enough to remember these things either.

Thanks,
Jesse
