How to Log into Ubuntu desktop from "user"localhost:~$ screen?

I've made a user account along with a password for it in username "root". after I log out of root and log back in as my new user, I get, "user"@localhost:~$

I'm not sure what to do from here, and I just want to get to the ubuntu desktop

any help on this will be greatly appreciated!

Code:

startx

startx

not sure why gdm wouldn't have started gnome.. Does this only occur on this new user, while other users log into a graphical desktop ?

I actually just got this Ubuntu to work this morning. so theres only one user currently. I tried startx while logged in and it returns:

-BASH: STARTX: COMMAND NOT FOUND

By the way, this is on a ps3

Did you not install X on the machine ? Did you possibly use the Server CD to do the install ? The Ubuntu Server edition does not install a Graphical desktop by default.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
