when installing the installation program asked what kind of installation you wanted, it sounds like you went for the non-graphical install, this would be very fine for a server or someone who wants to work from the command line only.

what you wanted too install was KDE, i thought this was checked as a default but you might have turned it off not knowing what it was,
so you have 3 options
1) start learning how to do everything from the command line
2) get cd 1 and try to install the full desktop on your current system
3) or the easiest would be to re-install everything again, making sure you select the KDE desktop evironment (its the big blue K)

this is indeed the way to change the default runlevel, but since only disc 1 and 5 was used the desktop was certainly not installed, when choosing the desktop install suse will already boot to the desktop by default.

Try rebooting of CD 1 and do a fresh install (not upgrade). If you are having problems, then thats your best bet. I had similar problems with slackware, so I gave up on it. Great distro, but too much of a pain.
