How to launch new programs ?
Hello All,
I have a few questions regarding the installation of programs via RPM. I’ve installed programs using Kpackage (mostly) with little difficulty. What I am having a bit of a problem with is starting the newly installed program. Bear with me as I am a GUI usin’ Newbie…
When I am finished with the installation, I can not find an icon to launch the program. I try a long look on the K menu (I am using Mandrake 9.1 rc1 with KDE 3.1, and have used MDK 9.0) but usually end up looking in Kpackage to see where the program file was installed and then I make a Launcher on the desktop (Is that the right term for a Shortcut in Linux?) pointing to that particular program. Is there an easier way? Am I not looking I the right place?
Thanks for the help!!
Mark

If the file was installed to your $PATH (take it for granted for now) then you can usually execute it by just typing the name of the app.
Example:
You download:
thisrocks-3.2.1.5-43.23.i686.rpm
And installed it, then to run it, you normally just go to your K Menu, go to "run" and type:
thisrocks
And it launches. So to make a desktop shortcut, you would just have to put the name of the app in the "launch" area.
Cool

Thanks for the reply, MasterC!
I have launched from the command line in the past, and will try from “Run” on the K menu. Just looking for a lazy GUI way out… 8)
Apparently, I will have to make my own launchers if I want them. I will search for information on adding directories to my path.
Regards,
Mark
