How to know remote system OS via console

If we login to a remote system via console using ssh, how do we actually knowing the OS that currently installed in the remote system, such as RedHat, Kubuntu or Fedora?

P/S: By typing >help in the console window, we just can know the version of the bash.

the distribution is normally listed in /etc/issue but there's no guarenteed cross distro way of knowing this. just various places you could look. e.g. redhat contains /etc/redhat-release, fedora contains /etc/fedora-release...
