Thank you ozanbaba, first time i came to understand this.

I finally got my swap partition activated following steps here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq

But do you think i really solved it as:

gab@gab-Inspiron-700m:~$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 479 459 20 0 16 138
-/+ buffers/cache: 304 175
Swap: 1513 0 1513

I am still having low figures or even 0 in the "free", "buffers" and "cached" columns of the "Mem" line.

Good thing is 0 figure in the "used" column of the "Swap" line.

if swapon -s lists your swap then it is used by the system.
