How to install X fonts on RHEL 6?

I am a linux newbie so please be gentle.

I am running some remote X clients displaying to my RHEL 6 Xserver. I am having a problem with one of the clients running on VMS and using old fonts. I get the error message that the software is unable to convert a particular font to a font structure. The X server substitutes a horrible font in its place.

I tried coping the appropriate font directory from VMS to a /usr/share/fonts font directory and pointing to the directory in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I still get the same error.

From my brief review of online documentation, it appears that RHEL 6 doesn't use this method of adding X fonts.

Any help on how to install new X fonts would be greatly appreciated.
