How to install Ubuntu from USB to unformatted hard drive?

Hi,
I'm new to Linux, basically I have a second PC laptop with an unformatted hard drive that I'd like to use to run Ubuntu.
Is it possible to boot it from an USB drive?

thanks

You are pretty vague about your intentions but, if you mean can you install and boot Ubuntu from an external drive - yes. More info would help someone to help you as far as your intentions.

Sorry
So I've downloaded Ubuntu onto a flash drive and I don't know how to install it on the laptop.
My intention is to have one pc that runs Linux exclusively so I can learn about it

Hi,

if you put the installer image on the flash drive correctly, you should just need to make sure the bios is set to boot from the flash drive (usb thumb drive?).

Have you read the Ubuntu installation instructions?

Is there more to it than simply copying it?

Thanks

Can you confirm that the machine really is attempting to boot from the usb stick?

Hi,

ok then it looks like there is something wrong with one or more of:

1. The USB system in the machine
2. The USB key
3. The image on the USB key

So you should trouble shoot each of them. For 1 try booting the usb stick on your other machine. For 2 try a different USB key. And for 3 try a different method for putting the image on the key (I think that documentation lists a couple of different ways to do it). Post back to let us know what progress you make.
