How to install Ubuntu
 

Hi, I'm new to LINUX too. I want to give a Linux chance. And I had installed Red Hat linx on my PC. But that was disaster, total horror. Installation went easy, and I had Linux on 2 partitions on my HD. But then... I have Win XP on partition D. When I want to go back on XP there is a message that windows failed to run, that he had missing some dll. How? Why? Dual boot change something in my XP and ruin it. After 4 hours I manage to revive XP. Ok, Red Hat was history. Then I tried to install Ubuntu 8. That was impossible. Setup cd was ok, but when I run installation there was message that I have unrecognizable CD-ROM device (something about RAID...) and that device can not be mount. I have Pioneer 216D DVD-RW, (AMD Athlon 64X2 dual core, 1 GB RAM, MSI K9N Neo V3 motherboard, HDD 320 GB...)

Install media was correct. I defrag HD once in a week, My HD had C partition (empty, I installed win on partition D), D partition, E partition (data), F is DVD-RW. I put Linux partition between C and D. And Red Hat WAS installed and functional, only my XP refuse to boot. But I'm more interested of Ubuntu mystery, that read CD and afterwards said that device can not be mount, and that installation are aborted…

How to solve problem with DVD-RW or CD-ROM mounting with this installaton?

Comment:

No. Dual booting can never change your XP in separate partition, only the master boot record at the beginning of first partition, C. Read Grub or Lilo and understand it first before trying to dual boot with Xp.

Comment:

Try disable RAID in the BIOS setup if you are not using RAID. Issues like these are usually solve at the hardware level which you can control under BIOS setup.

If your CD drive is optic there is no reason why Ubuntu can't see or mount that, although, there is also chance that Ubuntu is not yet ready to "drive" your "new" hardware (this is the most remote chance).

If RedHat ran over your pc, there is bigger chance you can run Fedora or CentOS. There are other distros that may have advanced with newly written drivers.

Personally I trust Debian, talking of hardware compatibility, the distro upon which Ubuntu and Mint are derived. You may also try Mint.

yea seems to be SATA problem , some Systems wont recognise SATA harddisk and cant get installed , if u have time plz install sabayon linux which will suit ur SATA hard disk
Based on ur other error, u might have installed in wrong place , may be over one partition that made u problem in booting

Solved, I installed Mandriva.
Ok people, now I installed something that work – Mandriva 2009. Installation went easier than before. And Mandriva looks very good indeed. And working (so far). I have all applications for start, CD and USB support, I have sound, can play music and mp3 files. Modem is still unrecognized (conexant 11252 56k fax), pirinter (HP laserjet 5L) also, but I think that can be solved. Thank you for all suggestions and gentleness for my inexperience. KDE looks very nice and even better than XP. And Mandriva is faster too. I hope that this is good beginning for me and my friends because I now have something to show them and persuade them to try Linux.

Well, hope you like it, y tried few months ago, didnt like at all, ill stay with debian!

but if mandriva works for you, then keep it. and it have a lot of information and big community in internet, good to solve your problems!

This is my first post (I need at least before I can put outside links in my posts). I hope you enjoy an have good luck iwth your future linux excursions. Mandriva was my first linux distro as will though it was called mandrake then.

I primarily use ubuntu now but enjoy testing others out when I get a chance.

I think you problem installing ubuntu might be fixed in the new version (9.04 jaunty jackalope). Also as mentioned above I had a very similar problem and my solution was to change a BIOS setting for my hardrive.
