How to install SUSE 8.2 without Retail CDs

Hi all

I am a true newbie in Linux, and am looking for some recommandations on which Linux distro to start with. I current have Redhat 8, and SUSE 8.2. I can install Redhat 8, but can't install SUSE 8.2.

I d/led SUSE 8.2 from SUSE ftp site, and am planning on installing it through my local Lan at home, i have a 4 port wireless router. I tried to install it but failed, and below is what I did in an attempt to install it.

I shared SUSE folder on another computer on my local network. Then I burned a copy of the boot cd from the image in /boot folder. Started the computer I want to install SUSE on, and booted off the cd. After the welcome screen, I got into the installation menu, where there are several options, such as Install, Custom Install, etc. There is also a text box on the bottom of the screen after I select each other, I think that's where I am suppose to type in the installation folder path. I went ahead and selected the Custom Install option, and typed in the text box on the bottom "linux install = '192.168.1.101/SUSE82'" that's the ip of the computer with SUSE shared, and the ip of the system I am trying to install SUSE suppose to have 192.168.1.100. Anyways, it gave me an error saying installation folder or image can't be found.

So can someone please help me, and explain in detail how to install SUSE 8.2 through local lan. thank you.

OK boot with the CD then choose Manual installation, no need to type anything.
After it gets to the main menu, select Kernel modules, load the network card module and other modules if necessary. Choose start installation, Network for source medum, then SMB(Windows share)
it'll then ask you for various infrmations such as how you wanna setup your own network configuration, server ip and share folder etc
so you type "192.168.1.101" for server ip, "suse82" when it asks for the folder. It'll also ask if you need an username nd/or password. After that it should proceed to the installation.
Also make sure you're sharing the root folder, the one that contains ARCHIVES.bz, INDEX.gz etc.

First I would like to thank you for the fast and detailed reply.

But I still have some problem, I tried selecting Manual Install, but after I select it, my screen goes blank, and nothing happens. :(

Tried Installation (Safe Settings)?
just boot it without adding any parameter, it'll still complain about not finding CD1 but just press OK and it'll kick you off to manual installation.

I tried again, but no matter what option I select, I get a blank screen afterwards, and computer just freezes...

OK, have you tried pressing f2 on the bootmenu and change video mode to text mode?

aaah nope, haven't tried that, I will try it later today. Btw I install Redhat 8, and I am using it now :D. So far so good... except I do not know how to switch to Text mode, and where I can find a list of most common command under text mode. Again thank you for the prompt replies :D

oh I am also looking for some drivers for my RH8:

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card
Canon F60 Printer
Leadtek XP2000 TV Card

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Press ctl+alt+F1~6 to use any of the 6 virtual consoles, if that's what you're after.
For the video card try the driver on ATI website, as for the TV card maybe your current kernel already supports it, from memory I think the Leadtek XP2000 uses the bt878 chipset(or something..not familiar with tv cards), otherwise not exactly sure where you can get the driver(module) for it, google is your best friend. As long as your have the right module loaded you just need to find the right software that can utilise the card.
As for the printer again google is your best friend :-)
