How to install software in linux?
 

hello people'
I want to install Opera and because I've never installed anything in linux I'm getting a BIT confused.
When I open the OPERA Folder what I get is:
3 folders: (Debian, locales and RPMS)
3 other ones that look like a box with a paper behind, and they say: (opera-7.11-20030515.1-static-gt.i386.tar.gz) , (opera-7.11-20030515.2-others-shared-gt.i386.tar.gz), and (opera-7.11-20030515.4-rh+mdk-shared-gt.i386.tar.gz).
Then another 2 with a bit of color in the icons and saying: (screenshot.png and screenshot thumb.png.
Please , what shall I do? And by the way does anyone of you know of a good virus checker for linux

Since you use Redhat, you should be able to download a .rpm and install that. RPM is Redhat Package Manager or something like that. In GUI, just click on it and give root password and it goes to installin.

Virus software. I use f-prot from, you guessed it, www.f-prot.com . It is free for home use, pay for commercial stuff. It is on the site what is what.

I do this command to scan everything mounted:

You can leave off the -list if you don't want the list of scanned files.

I use opera-7.11-20030515.1-static-qt.i386.rpm - don't know if there is a newer one but it works fine on red hat 9.

And forget the virus checker...you don't need one. Unless you login as root all the time. Then I guess you still won't need one.

Or you share files with windoze rigs. I run mine just incase I forward a e-mail that may have a bug attached.

I like the people I send e-mails to. Don't want to pass it on. You don't really need it for Linux though. Just don't go into root unless you are off the net.
