What reason do you have for installing such an old distribution ?
(I know others will ask ...)

Don't expect a really out of date distro to support more recent hardware. End of story.

RH 8 was reliced well before SATA was invented,

so if the laptop has a sata hard disk forget it,

use somthing form this centuary instead.
if you want somthing free and close enough to radhat that most tutorials will work try fedora

otherwise head over to www.distrowatch.com and pick somthing from the major distros list.
anything recent should work fine

It will not install on laptop with sata hard drives. You need something newer. If you are familiar with red hat based distros, you can try something like fedora. If distro is not your constraint and you can try for ubuntu. Trying out a live cd will be a better option. It will give you an idea how good your hardware is supported. RH8 is way tooo old. Throw that in dustbin and get something new.

Check out the Distro Reviews or the Linux Chooser

Linuxen are for the most part free so getting somthing else shouldent be a problem...

you wouldent install windows 95 on a brand new machine would you?

that's what you are attempting to do with RH8.0 and the chances are you wouldent get on with RH8 anyway, its not exactly user freindly.
most recent distros are many times over more freindly for new users

Anything in the top ten on the "hit list" at distrowatch.

If you like Redhat, then maybe try Fedora.
