I have downloaded the Red Hat Version 4 from their website.
I have burned the 1st ISO to disk.

However the PC doesn't boot from it, not does it boot from it when it is put on a USB stick.

I have tried making a burnabale disk using roxio but it came up with the message "Missing Operating System".

What do I need to do after I have downloaded the iso's but before I stick it into the cd tray to boot from?

Red Hat version 4 means? Do you mean Red Hat enterprise 4 ?
If you have iso with you, have you checked the md5sum for the integrity of the image?
And how did you burn the cd? As data?
No. You DO NOT burn it as data but as image.
Select an option similar to Burn Image to disk or something.

If you want RHEL4, may I suggest that you try CentOS? Its latest is CentOS 5.3 and 5.4 should be coming soon.
CentOS is RHEL with logos removed and no enterprise support and if you do not plan to buy their subscription then it is better to use CentOS.

it is Red Hat Version 4 AS...it is for corporate use eventually so suspect need for subscription too...shall wait and see

No doubt I will have more questions - wish the installations mentioned the fact you need to burn to CD as image...I tried as a bootable disk, normal cd etc but common sense avoided me.

Yeah. That is correct. Making a bootable disk may not work.

don't burn the .iso in a data cd. If you're using an burning application, select 'burn image to cd' or something like that

Red Hat 4 is not likely to be a sensible choice. It is seriously obsolete. If you plan to purchase and use Red Hat support, you will probably want RHEL 5.

If you want to test now (with a free download) in order to decide or prepare for buying RHEL 5. Don't do so with Red Hat 4.

Get Centos 5.3 (unless 5.4 is ready yet. I'm not sure). If you are going to switch to RHEL 5 later, Centos 5 is a better place to start than Red Hat 4. If you start with Centos 5.3 or later, you'll also discover you don't need more support than you get for free here at LQ, so you might not want to switch (subject to corporate policy of course).

I hope you now understand which option that is in your CD burning program. Many CD burning programs make that choice hard to find/identify.

do all the disks have to be burnt as images then?

Gotta use red hat 4 ...the application we will be installing has advised for it...plus they use it too...quite a big application as well.

You need to burn all your CD's as image = general rule = .ISO FILES SHOULD BE BURNED THROUGH "BURN IMAGE" OPTION IN THE CD BURN SOFTWARE.

About md5checksum, as soon as you put the CD into your server/computer, for RHEL all versions, you get an option to CHECK MEDIA. This runs the md5 check on the CD and validates the CD to be used for installations. If the test fails, you need to burn another new CD (burn as an IMAGE) and again run the MEDIA TEST.

And, YES YOU NEED TO BURN ALL THE 5 CD'S. NOT JUST 1. ALL PACKAGES/LIBRARIES ARE SPLIT ACROSS ALL THE CD'S SO U NEED THEM.

If you really want RHEL v4, talk to RH. There is no v7 or v9, that was the old non-RHEL RH Linux:

RHEL requires a paid subscription to get SW, updates & support.
Your company must have a subscription to use this.
As said above, I'd check whether they (your company) would allow you to use RHEL 5.4 (latest). It may save you a lot of trouble and the support lasts longer.

You will not get full version of RHEL4 for download. You will need to buy it. And you want to use it for some of your custom needs but do not want to pay, use CentOS. It is binary compatible with RHEL and free of cost as well.

We really have no option over the distribution or version I'm afraid. We need Red Hat Version 4 for the software we have...

At the minute the install is going well, a few disks corrupted but just re-downloaded and burned

another quick question then:

safest version of Cent0S or most stable?

Remember to be used as an Applications server?
