how to install MySQL on linux

Getting error message when I try to install MySQL-max-4.0.12-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz to the /usr/local. I installed it in /var/lib/mysql and now when I reboot it won't start automatically and when I type mysqld start it can't connect.

You could install it from the install cds easier using packages built for Redhat.

There is also apt4rpm and Red Carpet for easier than source code installs.

# Redhat links
RedHat Linux Manuals
Maximum RPM
rpmfind
Easier software management: apt4rpm - Red Carpet
RedHat 8.0 Tips & Tricks

# Redhat 7.3 down configuration commands
setup leads to several configuration tools

# Redhat 7.3 up configuration commands
Configure soundcard:
redhat-config-soundcard
Configure X server:
redhat-config-xfree86
Configure network:
redhat-config-network

Well depends. If you want to chroot it I wouldn't go for the rpm, I'd go for the gzipped tar version ... I will be using that version on Debian also and then create a chroot-mysql-4.x debian package out of it :-)
