Question How to install Linux from HDD

Hi

I want you're help on installing Linux from a ISO image on a harddisk partition.

I have the image in one of the partitions of my hdd. The problem is how do I start the setup at boot time since the ISO image is not mounted at the boot time. only when we start the setup it asks for the location to install from. Please help.

finally a chance to share my little secret XD XD XD.

first thing you need is a floppy drive or a bootable device that you can install GRUB on. There's something known as an "all in one boot floppy" download it here http://www.box.net/index.php?rm=box_...ame=nruahd0s8e

now you need to make a 1GB ext3 partition on your HDD and extract the ISO to that partition, after that, open up isolinux.cfg or whatever the CD's bootloader is and post it here, i can help you from there.

iso install

I don't know of any linux systems that can be put on floppy (emmulators perhaps) but you need to burn the iso to disk, reset the bios to boot from cd/dvd first, and then wait for it to load up, ps take the cd out after burning it.

hey fred, i've actually done it, you can write the ISO file directly to a 1GB or 5GB (depending on type of ISO) ext3 partition then use a grub boot floppy, it works on USB hard drives too, i use a 10GB internal HDD to boot an ubuntu live session

to get the partitions there, i use a DSL flash drive to boot from

With some liveCDs, you can mount the iso and copy the files to a partition, then move the kernel and initrd images into the /boot folder of the unpacked iso. Then make an entry in your hard drive grub menu.lst. You will see that entry in the grub menu at boot time, and you can boot it.

It takes a bit of trial and error to get it worked out, but it can be done. I have my OpenSuse install DVD image starting up that way. As soon as I bet my butt in gear and rearrange my partitions, I intend to try the installation from that unpacked image.
