How To Install Kubuntu With Knoppix And 98 Already On System
HEY FRIENDS......
I have been using knoppix for past 1 year and except for some difficulties am very very satisfied with its performance so far.I am now intrested in trying some new distros like kubuntu an I have got its cd too.I have a 40G hd partioned as 30 for windows 98 (c,d) an 10 forknoppix as hda6 (storage) and hda8 (home). My windows is totally messed up so I dont use it any more just a storage space. My system is currently dual boot. Now I want to install kubuntu without loosing knoppix. Can I do that if yes how.I have 512 swap (hda7). Plzz reply ASP...waitin ........ regards kiran |
Supposing that you're going to wipe your Windows partition (is that right?), you want to make sure that this doesn't effect the way that Knoppix boots. So how are you booting Knoppix?
And what is in hda5? |
So I'm going to have to gess your paritions are:
hda1 -> Windows C hda2 -> Windows D hda3 -> Linux / hda4 -> Linux /something hda5 -> Linux /somethingelse hda6 -> Linux /Storage hda7 -> Linux swap hda8 -> Linux /home If this is correct, you should be able to install Kubuntu over the windows partitions. you should even be able to use the same swap and /home partitions just do NOT format the /home partition. Remember to back up anything you want to keep from the windows partitions, as they'll be zapped into Linux partitons ... in fact, back up everything you want to keep from the whole machine, onto a CD. Then, If you somehow bork your whole HD (not likely, but paranoia can be a good thing in certain circumstances) you still have everything you want to keep. ;) |
thnks a lot ppl but here are some more details
1.what if i wanna keep my win98 as i hav data on it which i will take on my friends HD but later. 2.my hda1 is c: my hda5 is d: my hda6 is linux storage my hda7 is swap my hda8 is home 3.i hav knoppix 4 and win98 as dual boot presently. thats it plzz update me...an once again thnks a ton for ur damn quick help ..... thnks tons kiran |
So where exactly are you going to put this new install?
If you can reduce the size of hda1, and make a new PRIMARY partition (not extended) between it and your hda5 - 8, as hda2, then this should not change the names of hda5 - 8. These are numbered that way because they are logical partitions, inside an extended partition (which is probably currently called hda2). So your new partition would be hda2, your new extended partition would be hda3, and hda5 - 8 would stay the same. This is is all providing that you can make the space in the windows partition, to shrink it, and that you manage to shrink it. gparted, qtparted, and parted can all do this (sometimes). So - make the space - defrag in windows if necessary - change size of hda1 with *parted - create new hda2 - install into hda2 Else you could put your new install in hda5 - how big is it and what's in it now? You still didn't say how you are booting your knoppix (and windows). Are you using grub? |
Thnks For Ur Help But I Hav Found My Disk Has Lots Of Data Which I Need To Bac Up First Then I Will Install An Experiment With New Distos.....an I Think I Hav Grub......my Hda5 Has Lots Of Data An Its Vfat .
