knopix install to HD

Hii there,

Knopix install from CD to HD .... unknown.

Have you tried MEPIS ???

This is a great debian based distribution ..
Knopix-like CD but with easy wizard based installation to hard disk.

I'm beginning to wonder---is it possible that there could be different versions of KNOPPIX 3.6 CDs where the Installation Wizard is in different directories?

According to all the documentation I've read about installing 3.6 on a hard drive, all you have to do is type ' sudo knoppix-installer ' and this is supposed to open up the installation wizard. Well, it wasn't that simple for me.

I got suspicious and did a 'whereis knoppix-installer ' and lo and behold, it comes up' /usr/sbin/knoppix-installer.

So, it appears that when I was typing
sudo knoppix-installer
the default working directory was incorrect and it didn't have knoppix-installer.

I then tried this:
sudo /usr/sbin/knoppix-installer
and what do you know?......there was it was, the Installation Wizard! .

Nowhere in all the documentation about installing KNOPPIX 3.6 on the HD with the simple command 'sudo knoppix-installer' did I see any mention of making sure that proper working directory was selected or otherwise making sure that the command itself, included the directories.

So, all you guys who have given up on installing KNOPPIX 3.6 on HD with the command the documentation tells you to use,try
sudo /usr/sbin/knoppix-installer

super user password

Hello

I want to clarify one thing ... I am new to knoppix....... so i was wondering wheather i have to first load knoppix using the cd and then open root and then use the super user ... but i think for that we need password and i have not set one (as i run the CD) so what to do ?? is there any default password that i can try???????????????

also in the text file regarding the cheat codes in knoppix the technique for installation on hard drive seems to be very peculiar.......... has any one read that text files( i have forgotten the exact file name.. .....)

last time I installed knoppix satish427, I just booted the CD, opened a terminal and typed in "sudo knoppix-installer" and it launched fine.

Sure, once you got the knoppix installed, you'd have to make do with what ever users either you set or just user "knoppix" and then "sudo" commands that normally have to be done as root, untill you learned enough to change it to your liking. Most of which, you should be able to find at the knoppix forums.

Stuff like changing the "apt-sources" list so that when you update, you are using your nearest debian sources, that way it eventually becomes a "proper" debian install - but you would have had all the convenience of the excellent knoppix hardware detection and auto configuration - you just don't wanna know how much of a nightmare it could be doing it "the debian way" i.e. all manual configuration - well, until you know a fair bit about linux anyway.

regards

John
