How to install GUI in Red Hat linux 6.2?
 

Good morning, when i first install Red Hat Linux 6.2, i in the installation wizard there i choice the "Server" not a workstation, after finish i install, when start boot to this OS, there just only "command line interface" whatever i press CTRL+ALT+F6 also cannot go to GUI. than i see the process status command PS -A, there dont have X running. How to install GUI(Gnome,KDE)?i already try to install. Example: rpm X******.rpm to install but cannot?? what step to install Gnome and KDE,and how to configure when start Linux than i can choice for GUI or command interface. Please help me thank you.

First, RH 6.2 is very very obsolete---you will be much better off installing something more modern. If you like Redhat, then try Fedora 6 or 7.

If you chose a server install, then X-Windows + KDE or Gnome may not be installed.

You don't. It should be illegal to install a Linux distro that old, because it just makes things more difficult for everyone in the long run. Even a couple years is a long time in the Linux world, so seven is like eons. (Red Hat 6.2 was released on April 3, 2000)

Soooo....I guess I'm in a bit of trouble with my Apple-II and my copy of Windows 3.1.....

sure you can use RH 6.2--you just may need to work a bit harder...;);)

I have a pentium 2 system with RH 7.2 installed. It used to have 6.2 on it until someone from the linux users group gave me a copy of 7.2 which I installed over the top of it. THe hardware is very old & not very fast. It is one of the first systems with the ext3 filesystem. The same pc has also got
windows 98 & beos & calera open linux.

Without knowing how the system is used, you better recall that statement. I'm still running RH6.2 in a professional environment as I don't have the time to investigate of the dedicated hardware and software will work on newer versions. And I don't think that it makes your life difficult as you can not get to the machine.

Calm down there, it was meant playfully. In some production environments, older kernel versions may be needed for weird hardware and certain apps. This is, however, a very special case which I assume would have been mentioned earlier. Most people don't have to deal with legacy systems.

There also seems to be a rumor going around that hardware requirements are directly proportional to the age of the distro. Obviously, this isn't actually the case as there are brand spanking new lightweight distros, and older ones built like battle tanks.

For instance, really old releases haven't got up to date security fixes. Just a consideration. It's also very difficult to get help because almost nobody uses stuff that old and you can't get updated SW in a lot of cases.
