How to install full download(Suse 9.0) from hard drive
 

The FTP install will work, but I don't want to wait to download for 20 hours on a T-1. I saved the whole directory tree to my desktop(Win2KPro) and I am trying to install Suse.

When trying this, I chose install from hard drive, then select the static IP of my machine, then the path, but it doesn't find it. Do I need to put it in the root of C:\ in it's own folder?

I would rather not have to setup an FTP server to do it. I am probably thinking too much like Windows :P

Any help would be appreciated for this seemingly simple task...

I think that you do have to set it up using ftp, or use nfs, or export it as a windows share, go select SMB as the install server, it might work...
Otherwise, you're right FTP install is SSSLLLOOOWWW, tried it, but found my DVD faster

Well I tried sharing out my drive and the installation folder, but that didn't work either...said can't find image. I thought it would work, because it shows my NTFS hd1 partition which is my Win2K drive. After I select that partitition and type the source folder, it doesn't do anything...just stays at the same menu. If I try it again, it says "Can't mount partition".

Very frustrating...I guess I'll give in and try to do a minimal FTP install, then add packages later.

Use a second computer... Anyways I am goung to try it by downloading the whole thing and then using a second computer over my LAN as the host FTP server, I'll post my sucesses here when I'm done.

--EDIT-- It will take a while, suse server said it would take 5days to download it to HD

Ok, yeah, let me know how that works out for you. I have ordered the cd's, but this(like so many other times) has turned into a vendetta lol.

Hi,
I own a laptop wich has no CD-ROM and installed via FTP and via HDD.

The entire SuSE 9.0 download takes about 7.2GB. Be sure to keep the same directory structure as the suse FTP. I used /mirror/suse/i386/9.0.

For the FTP way I used typesoft freeware ftp for windows. Made a user with password and pointed the source directory to /mirror/. I boot with the 5 boot disks and choose install from FTP. It asks for a user and password and the directory where the files are located, there I put suse/i386/9.0, and then it loads. But it is slow since I did not figure out how to let my ethernet card faster than 10M while it is a 10/100!!!

For the HDD installation I used the same directory structure on a fat32 partition. I start the installation and point to the HDA6 partition and enter mirror/suse/i386/9.0 and there it goes. If the files were to be located on ntfs you have to load an ntfs module.

WHOA, so you are using the same machine??? Put it on a fat32drive(if you can) and use the harddisk install, much faster than even a local ftp server
(mine is been going for 4 hours, and is 25% done only)

EDIT-- The FTP server said that Yast was logged on for a grand total on 7hours, 30 minutes, 14 seconds

Yeah, I was trying it that way but it didn't work out. I finally got the cd's in and I'm up an running now. Lot's of great info though from this forum, and for that, I salute you and the others!
