How to install from ".tar.gz" files or from source file in FC3

i have referred many books in this subject, all they say is:
1.Unzip with tar and gzip commands
2.Run ./confgure command
3.Run make all command
etc etc etc........

Even though i get things done with these tips i feel that i deserve to know more, like what happens when we give these what happens during ./configure command make all command etc.......hope you got what i mean....

I know that the method followed for different files is different.......just give me a detailed account to the general procedure or a link to some HOW-TO pages.....please...
